What is potato contract farming in India?
Potato contract farming is a written agreement, made before planting, in which a chips, fries or seed company agrees to buy a named variety from a grower. The company usually supplies seed and field advice, sets a quality spec (dry matter, size, sugars), and agrees a buy-back price or price formula and a harvest window. PepsiCo, McCain and HyFun run such programmes.

How a potato contract works, step by step
Every company writes its own contract, but most potato contracts follow the same six steps. Read each one in your draft before you sign.
Step 1
Variety and spec
The buyer names the variety and the quality it will accept. For chips and fries the two key numbers are dry matter and reducing sugars: ICAR-CPRI research treats dry matter above 20% as acceptable for chips, fries and dehydrated products, and reducing sugars below 100 mg per 100 g of fresh potato as acceptable for chips. Size grades are set in each contract.
Step 2
Seed supply
Most processors supply seed of their variety, either sold to the grower or recovered from the crop payment. PepsiCo, for example, supplies its FL 2027 (FC5) seed to contracted growers, who sell the crop back to it (Reuters, April 2019).
Step 3
Agronomy visits
The company’s field staff visit through the season to advise on planting, irrigation, nutrition and disease, and to estimate yield. PepsiCo reports 18,000+ acres and 7,000+ farmers mapped on its Smart Farms programme (AgroSpectrum India, September 2026).
Step 4
Harvest window and storage
The contract fixes when the crop is lifted and delivered, either straight from the field or from cold storage later. Processing potatoes are kept warmer than table potatoes (about 10–12°C with a sprout suppressant) because cold storage raises sugars and darkens chips (Potato Journal, 2013; Mahajan et al., 2008).
Step 5
Grading and rejection
At delivery the load is sampled and tested against the spec: size, dry matter, sugars, defects, greening, rot. The contract should say who samples, where, whether you can be present, and what happens to a rejected load.
Step 6
Price and payment
The price is either fixed before planting or set by a written formula (for example a base price with premiums or deductions for quality). The contract should state the price or formula, the deductions (seed, inputs), and the number of days after delivery you are paid.

PepsiCo potato contract farming
PepsiCo India grows the potatoes for Lay’s with contracted farmers. It says it works with about 36,000 farmers across 14 states and sources all its chip-grade potatoes in India (AgroSpectrum India, 17 September 2026). Under the programme PepsiCo supplies seed of its own variety, FL 2027 (also called FC5), and the farmers sell the crop back to it at a fixed price (Reuters, April 2019). Its field programme includes Smart Farms, which PepsiCo says covers 18,000+ mapped acres and 7,000+ farmers, and soil-health testing (AgroSpectrum India, September 2026).
How to approach PepsiCo
- Use only the contact details on PepsiCo India’s official website, or speak to its field staff and existing contract growers in your district.
- Never pay a “registration fee” to someone who calls, texts or messages you about a PepsiCo contract. We know of no official PepsiCo farmer fee, and we publish no PepsiCo phone number.
- Or send us your details. We try to connect you with a processor or seed company that is buying in your district, PepsiCo or another. We are not PepsiCo’s agent.
Why the variety clause matters: the FC5 case
In April 2019 PepsiCo India sued 11 farmers in Gujarat for growing FL 2027 (FC5) without its permission, claiming rights under the Protection of Plant Varieties and Farmers’ Rights (PPV&FR) Act, 2001 (Business Today, April 2019). It withdrew all the suits in May 2019 after talks with the Gujarat government (Bar & Bench, May 2019). On 3 December 2021 the PPV&FR Authority revoked PepsiCo’s registration for the variety (Down To Earth, December 2021). On 9 January 2024 a division bench of the Delhi High Court set that order aside and sent PepsiCo’s renewal application back to the Registrar to decide (LiveLaw, 10 January 2024). The lesson for growers: read what your contract says about the variety, who owns it, and whether you may keep seed.

For processors: contracted potato acreage
Tell us the variety, the tonnes you need, your harvest or delivery window and the districts you want to source from. We shortlist grower groups and FPOs in those districts that can grow to your spec, help you check them (land, irrigation, cold store access, track record), and help structure a fair written contract covering seed, spec, rejection, price and payment. See our farmer and FPO sourcing service and contract structuring. We advise and facilitate; we are not a party to the contract and do not guarantee volumes.
Need a chips or fries variety grown to spec? Send variety, tonnes, harvest window and districts.
Seed potato on contract
Seed companies contract growers to multiply seed; Punjab’s Doaba belt is the best-known seed area, and Mahindra HZPC has contracted 600+ seed growers there (Business Standard, 2014). A seed crop has extra rules a ware crop does not, such as isolation, roguing and certification records, set by the seed certification agency. If you want to grow or buy certified seed of a table variety, our sister site IndianPotato covers Kufri Bahar 3797 potato seed in detail: the CPRI seed chain, how to check a certified tag, and buying in UP.
Landowners in the potato belt
Own land in Agra, Deesa, Indore, Jalandhar or Hooghly that you don’t farm? You can lease it on a fair written agreement to a potato grower, or have it farmed for you under managed farming, and keep the land.
Contract checklist for potato growers
Check these nine points in any potato contract before you sign, or have us review the contract for you.
1. Variety clause
Which variety, who owns it, and whether you may keep or sell seed from the crop. Protected varieties can carry legal rights for the breeder.
2. Spec and rejection
The exact dry matter, sugar, size and defect limits, who samples and where, and what happens to a rejected load (taken back, sold elsewhere, paid at a lower rate).
3. Price or formula
A fixed price per quintal, or a written formula with every premium and deduction. Ask for a worked example on paper.
4. Payment days
How many days after delivery you are paid, by bank transfer, with a settlement sheet.
5. Seed cost recovery
The seed price, how it is recovered (cash, or deducted from the crop payment), and what happens to that debt if the crop fails.
6. Crop insurance
Whether the crop is insured, under which scheme, who pays the premium and who receives a claim.
7. Harvest and storage
Who decides the lifting date, who pays for cold storage and transport, and who carries the loss if the company delays lifting.
8. Dispute route
Who decides a quality or payment dispute: a named person, conciliation, then a court or authority. A neutral route protects both sides.
9. The law in your state
The Centre’s Model Contract Farming Act, 2018 is a template. We found no state law based on it in force as of October 2026: Tamil Nadu’s 2019 Act was repealed in 2021 before it came into force, and Punjab’s 2013 Act was repealed (Punjab Act 5 of 2022). Check your state’s APMC rules.

FAQ
Potato contract farming: common questions
How can I do potato contract farming with PepsiCo?
PepsiCo India contracts growers for its chip varieties, supplying seed and buying the crop back (Reuters, April 2019). Approach it only through the contact details on its official website or its field staff in your area, and never pay a “registration fee” to anyone who calls or messages you. You can also send us your district, acres and variety and we try to connect you with a processor or seed company buying in your district.
Which companies do potato contract farming in India?
Public sources show PepsiCo India (chips, about 36,000 farmers in 14 states, Sept 2026), McCain Foods India (fries, 2,500+ farmers, Gujarat), HyFun Foods (fries, about 7,000 farmers in Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh), ITC through Technico (chips stock and seed) and Mahindra HZPC (seed, Punjab). Programmes change, so check the current position with the company. We are not an agent of any of them.
What price do potato contract farmers get?
The price is either fixed before planting or set by a written formula, usually a base price with premiums or deductions for quality. Companies do not publish a common rate, and we have not found a current, dated public price, so we quote no rupee figure. Ask for the price or formula in writing, with a worked example, before you plant.
Which potato varieties are grown on contract for chips and fries?
Each company names its own variety. PepsiCo uses its FL 2027 (FC5) variety. ICAR-CPRI has bred Kufri Frysona and Kufri FryoM for fries, and Kufri Chipsona-1 kept good chip colour in storage trials (Potato Journal, 2013). Santana and Quintera are named in the planned Farm Frites–KRIBHCO fries project. What matters is the spec: dry matter above 20% and low reducing sugars.
Can a small farmer do potato contract farming?
Yes, usually through a group or FPO. Companies prefer to deal with one group that can deliver a set tonnage on time rather than many separate small farmers. If you farm a few acres, join or form a group with neighbours who grow the same variety, and contract as a group.
Do I need cold storage for contract potatoes?
It depends on the contract. Some buyers take the crop straight from the field; others want it stored and delivered later in the season. Processing potatoes need warmer storage (about 10–12°C with a sprout suppressant) than table potatoes, because cold storage raises sugars and darkens chips. Check who arranges and pays for storage.
What happens if my potatoes are rejected?
That depends on what the contract says, which is why the rejection clause matters. A fair contract states the test limits, lets you be present at sampling, and says whether a rejected load is taken at a lower rate, returned to you, or left for you to sell elsewhere. Get this in writing before you plant.
Is potato contract farming legal in my state?
Yes, a contract between a buyer and a farmer is legal under the Indian Contract Act, 1872. The Centre’s Model Contract Farming Act, 2018 is a template, and we found no state law based on it in force as of October 2026. The 2020 central farm law on agreements was repealed in 2021. Your state’s APMC rules may add registration steps, so check them.
Can I grow seed potato on contract?
Yes. Seed companies contract growers to multiply seed; Punjab’s Doaba belt is the best-known seed area. Mahindra HZPC, for example, has worked with 600+ Punjab seed growers and bought seed back at a minimum guaranteed price (2014). A seed crop has extra rules for isolation, roguing and certification. Tell us your district and experience.
I need 500 acres of a chips variety. Can you find growers?
